NewsGuard’s News Reliability Tool Now Free Until July 1

With NewsGuard’s browser extension installed, users have access to ratings and reviews of website reliability, integrated directly in their social media feeds and search engine results.

Access to accurate information is important now, more than ever. With news about the coronavirus pandemic emerging every minute, the deluge of information has been accompanied by a flood of misinformation. It is vital for members of our community to be equipped with the skills and tools to access reliable information.

Earlier this year, we partnered with NewsGuard, a tool that helps people assess the reliability of the news they see on social media and in search results.

Over the past few weeks, NewsGuard has noticed a proliferation in dangerous misinformation about the novel coronavirus, which it is keeping tabs on in its new Coronavirus Misinformation Tracking Center. In response to this troubling trend, NewsGuard is removing its paywall and making its browser extension free until July 1. This will enable all citizens – including those who use NewsGuard at libraries that are now temporarily closed – to have access to these ratings during this time of crisis.

After July 1, members of our community will be able to continue accessing NewsGuard’s ratings for free on computers at the library.

NewsGuard does not advertise or collect personal information, so users can be confident that their privacy will be protected. To download the extension on your computer (available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari), click here.
