Old Willis Place
by Mary Downing Hahn
Recommended by Kathleen McTeer, Children's Services Manager
Intended audience: Kids
Tired of the rules that have bound them ever since "the bad things happened", 12 year-old Diana ignores her brother's warnings and befriends the daughter of the new caretaker, setting in motion events that lead to the release of the spirit of an evil, crazy woman who once ruled the old Willis place.
For readers of scary books, Mary Downing Hahn is by far one of the most prolific and scary writers I have read. I enjoyed the surprise elements, and in the end, all was peaceful at the Old Willis Place. This title is available at the Beaufort Branch Library, SCLENDS, and Hoopla.
96 Miles
by J. L. Epslin

During a massive blackout in rural Nevada, two brothers struggle to survive without their self-reliance-obsessed dad and without enough water cross the desert for help.
This book is filled with suspense and page turning surprises! There is always something to learn! This title can be found in SCLENDS and in Hoopla (audio format)
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
by Charles M. Schulz
Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator
Intended audience: Kids
Reading this book is the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit! It's so much fun to join Charlie Brown and the gang as they enjoy the fall weather, make their Halloween costumes, go trick-or-treating, and, of course, wait for the Great Pumpkin!
I am recommending this book because it doesn't feel like Halloween until I read it. It's a fun, festive, classic children's book and reading (usually more than once) is the perfect way to kick off Halloween season! Can be found on SCLENDS.
Bumpy Little Pumpkin
by Margery Cuyler
Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator
Intended audience: Kids
Even though her big sister thinks the pumpkin she chose is ugly, Little Nell can see that it is special. This book is about not judging someone by how they look but finding value in what is on the inside.
I am recommending this book because, especially in this social media obsessed age, it is important to remember that looks aren't everything. It serves as a great reminder that even the bumpiest, littlest pumpkin is beautiful! Can be found on SCLENDS.
Are you scared, Darth Vader?
by Adam Rex
Recommended by Andrew Newell, Library Assistant

Follow Darth Vader as the narrator tries to discover what frightens the Sith Lord. This picture book is entertaining for kids and parens alike, putting Darth Vader into a silly situation (and lets you try your best Vader voice).

The one Thing You'd Save
by Linda Sue Park
Recommended by Wendy Purdy, Library Assistant
Intended audience: Kids
If there was a fire in your house, what is the one thing you would save? This is the assignment Ms. Chang has given to her class. Family and pets are already safe, so that is good!
This is a small but powerful book about the discussion the class has about the assignment. Written in Korean Poetry form Sijo.
I am recommending this book because it is thought provoking for young readers. A great conversation starter. This title is available in SCLENDS.
Catherine's war

Set in Paris during the Nazi Regime, this graphic novel is a true survival story. Based on the author's mother's own experiences as a hidden child during world war 11. Catherine, a young Jewish girl in a French children's home, finds her passion in photography and uses her precious camera to help her survive
I am recommending this book because I love survival stories and especially true World War 11 survival stories! This graphic novel will inspire and empower young readers. This title can be found in SCLENDS and Hoopla.

This hilarious read aloud will hit the funny bones and make everyone laugh. Skeleton has the hiccups; he asks his friends to help her rid of them. He tries all sorts of funny ways to get the hiccups away. Nothing works until he makes a shocking discovery!!

Big Pumpkin
by Eric Silverman
Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator
Intended audience: Kids
Everybody's favorite Halloween characters make an appearance in this not-at-all-scary book about teamwork, perseverance, and pumpkin pie.

Pig the Monster
by Aaron Blabey
Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator
Intended audience: Kids
Pig the Pug takes things a little too far (as usual) on Halloween and finally learns his lesson. At least for the time being. Kids and kids at heart will enjoy watching Pig's Halloween antics and seeing what mischief he will get into this time.
I am recommending this book for several reasons: 1) Pig and Trevor are adorable (even though Pig tends to get himself into trouble), 2) Pig and Trevor going trick-or-treating and Pig being a little (or a lot) greedy with his treats is fun and funny to see, and 3) Seeing Pig and Trevor in various costumes and having some Halloween fun is an awesome way to get into the Halloween spirit! Can be found on SCLENDS.
Little Old Lady Who was Not Afraid of Anything
by Linda Williams
Recommended by Sarah C. Califf, Library Assistant
Intended audience: Kids
Ordinary objects become animated, spooking the little old lady.
Great read-aloud for young children with repetitive action words and just enough scare factor. This book is available in SCLENDS.
