Old Willis Place

by Mary Downing Hahn

Recommended by Kathleen McTeer, Children's Services Manager

Intended audience: Kids

Tired of the rules that have bound them ever since "the bad things happened", 12 year-old Diana ignores her brother's warnings and befriends the daughter of the new caretaker, setting in motion events that lead to the release of the spirit of an evil, crazy woman who once ruled the old Willis place.

For readers of scary books, Mary Downing Hahn is by far one of the most prolific and scary writers I have read. I enjoyed the surprise elements, and in the end, all was peaceful at the Old Willis Place. This title is available at the Beaufort Branch Library, SCLENDS, and Hoopla.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

by Charles M. Schulz

Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator

Intended audience: Kids

Reading this book is the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit! It's so much fun to join Charlie Brown and the gang as they enjoy the fall weather, make their Halloween costumes, go trick-or-treating, and, of course, wait for the Great Pumpkin!

I am recommending this book because it doesn't feel like Halloween until I read it. It's a fun, festive, classic children's book and reading (usually more than once) is the perfect way to kick off Halloween season! Can be found on SCLENDS.

Bumpy Little Pumpkin

by Margery Cuyler

Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator

Intended audience: Kids

Even though her big sister thinks the pumpkin she chose is ugly, Little Nell can see that it is special. This book is about not judging someone by how they look but finding value in what is on the inside.

I am recommending this book because, especially in this social media obsessed age, it is important to remember that looks aren't everything. It serves as a great reminder that even the bumpiest, littlest pumpkin is beautiful! Can be found on SCLENDS.

Pig the Monster

by Aaron Blabey

Recommended by Brittany Oates, Youth Services Coordinator

Intended audience: Kids

Pig the Pug takes things a little too far (as usual) on Halloween and finally learns his lesson. At least for the time being. Kids and kids at heart will enjoy watching Pig's Halloween antics and seeing what mischief he will get into this time.

I am recommending this book for several reasons: 1) Pig and Trevor are adorable (even though Pig tends to get himself into trouble), 2) Pig and Trevor going trick-or-treating and Pig being a little (or a lot) greedy with his treats is fun and funny to see, and 3) Seeing Pig and Trevor in various costumes and having some Halloween fun is an awesome way to get into the Halloween spirit! Can be found on SCLENDS.
