Renovation of 2nd Floor has begun!

Check back often for updates.

Current hours in effect:  Mondays through Fridays, 10 am until 5 pm.

The BDC welcomes all visitors and researchers over the age of 12 years. We're glad to have you come use our resources and expertise. However, please be aware that we are operating under severe space constraints this summer.  We can only guarantee seating for four researchers at any one time.

Benefits of the Relocation of the BDC to the 2nd Floor

  1. Appropriate storage for archival materials

  2. Increase the storage capacity of the BDC almost triple-fold
  3. Better security for special materials
  4. Raise the materials above the 100 year flood plain level
  5. Add more room for customers to work on their own research interests
  6. Provide display space to share the "Wonders of the Beaufort District Collection" with our residents and school children
  7. Provide better environmental control of temperature, humidity and light to protect materials

During this transitional period, we regret that our space constraints limits our ability to serve groups of researchers. We can only accommodate 4 researchers at a time.  Please call 470-6525 for more information.

NOTE: "4 and No More!" Call 470-6525 for details.

Using the Beaufort District Collection

Welcome to Beaufort County Library’s Beaufort District Collection (BDC). We offer a research collection of permanent value which focuses on Beaufort District history, culture, and environment.  At various points in the past, Beaufort District included all or parts of current Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Allendale counties.  General coverage is granted to the rest of South Carolina.

The Beaufort District Collection is staffed by one full-time librarian and one full-time preservation associate, with the assistance of trained docents.

Materials may not be removed from the Beaufort District Collection.  However, duplicate copies of some titles are available through the "Local History" sections at the Beaufort Branch Library, Bluffton Branch Library, Hilton Head Branch Library, Lobeco Branch Library, and the St. Helena Branch Library.

Most of the printed items held within the BDC may be photocopied in the Beaufort District Collection room, pursuant to U.S. copyright laws.  However, some materials owned by the BDC cannot be duplicated due to the fragility of the materials.  If you want to make photocopies of or use an electronic or digital means of acquiring a copy of a resource housed within the BDC, you must ask for permission to do so from the Beaufort District Collection staff.

We grant permission to reproduce images from our Beaufort District Collection under limited criteria.  Please consult with the us about how to obtain permission to reproduce images owned by the Beaufort County Library.

Visitors from out of town are encouraged to contact the librarian before traveling to the Beaufort District Collection to do research. Many of Beaufort’s family and public records prior to the 20th century were destroyed or lost. The Librarian will be happy to discuss existing resources that are relevant to your research and potential strategies for accommodating the significant loss of our records.

The progress of the 2nd floor renovation and preparing for that move will affect the availability of our resources over the next several months.  Please visit this web page often for updates!
