An Associated Press article,"Population Booms along S. C. Coast, Suburbs"(Beaufort Gazette, March 16, 2001; page 6-A), reported that the 2000 census population figure for Beaufort County was 120,937 With an increase of 39.9% over the 1990 total of 86,425, Beaufort County experienced the largest growth rate among the 49 counties of South Carolina (Horry County was second in the state, with a 2000 population count of 196,629 over the 1999 figure of 144,053, for a gain of 36.5%).
