Encourage your teen to go 'beneath the surface' this summer

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

School's out, summer's here and places are crowded. Opt to go "Beneath the Surface" at the Beaufort County library, the free teen summer blockbuster that's a "don't miss."

It's been almost 40 years since the original summer blockbuster Jaws kept millions wondering what lurked below the ocean's surface. A life-changing experience for many, Steven Spielberg's special effects phenomenon ruled the summer of 1975. It's high time for another epic summer -- the kind that inspires repeat visits for more and more thrills.

The "Beneath the Surface" summer reading program sign-up started at all Beaufort County library branches on Monday. This is a free ticket to do everything from learning how to make your own films, fonts and animations in the library's new Mac Media Production Lab on St. Helena Island to designing your own video games to applying special effects and theatrical makeup to competing retro game-style in a true Atari-Nintendo-Sega flashback.

Ask yourself, "What lies beneath the surface of that quiet roadside burial ground?"

If you "dig" all things graveyard, get forensic at the St. Helena Island library with cemetery expert Debi Hacker to examine real human bones for clues. Inspect the crime scene at the Hilton Head Island library and solve its After Hours Teen Mystery. Or get historical digging up your Civil War ancestors -- both Blue and Gray -- at the Lobeco and Beaufort branches.

Ask a teen librarian: "What blossoms beneath the surface of the library's teen collections?"

There are endless opportunities for a five-star reading experience in every genre and format, from anime to e-books, bios to manga. You'll find Collins, Condy, CLAMP, Clare and loads of other teen authors and series. Put a dent in your summer reading list, sample a variety of new technologies and score prizes to boot. Teens in grades six through 12 who read any five books or complete five activities on the "Beneath the Surface" grid will be eligible to win prizes at any of the county's five library branches at summer's end. By making weekly library visits, teens also add an entry in weekly drawings for prizes including backpacks, T-shirts and gift cards. Stop by a library service desk for teen activity grid sheets and details.
