Emancipation Day in Port Royal

Coastal Heritage Magazine (available online and in the BDC Research Room) has a fabulous article about the Jubilee. "Emancipation Day: The Freed People of Port Royal," by John Tibbetts, recounts the activities of the day from several perspectives and posits that "On Emancipation Day–January 1, 1863–sea islanders of the Beaufort District realized what they must do to help defeat the Confederacy and keep their freedom."
